Staying focused whilst driving is super important, especially if you are driving with children. There are so many things to think about and plan before heading to the road. Even if you think you are very experienced driver and nothing can happen to you whilst on the road, please still be very careful. I have had my licence for over 10 years, but just a few month ago, I hit the car in front of me where it was almost impossible to hit the car. There was a traffic on the road, I was listening to the music when I got a text message from my friend. I did not even think twice on replying and only realised I hit the car in front of me when I hit my head really bad on the steering wheel. Thankfully I was alone in the car that time and nothing serious happened to anyone involved, but I cant stop thinking about that moment, what if I had my kids in the car? what if someone got injured?
As you can see it is so easy to get distracted while driving and drivers need to prevent distractions when they get behind the wheel. This is why Kwik Fit has created an online game called Driven to Distraction which helps you to understand how easy it is to be distracted by a mobile phone while driving. From the first day I found out about this game, I tell everyone to give it a go and this is why I am sharing it with you too. You will be surprised as to how much impact using the mobile phones can have while driving.
Driving to distraction game is very easy to play:
- Concentrate as you are driving down the road, and be sure to click on the screen when you see the “stop” sign.
- Your phone will pop up with a question about road safety, be sure to read it carefully to get the right answer.
- Click the right answer to the question… A, B, C or D, try and get as many right as you can!
- Click as fast as you can when you see the “stop” sign again and we’ll record your response time.
This game simulates driving along a road and you have to click on the screen when a stop sign appears. You then have to try it again, but this time while reading text messages that flash up on screen. The game then calculates how much longer it took you to stop second time around and tells you the stopping distance. The results can shocking and eye opening as anything can happen even in less than a second while driving if you get distracted.
As you can see from my results, I did get the answers correct but I was 2.795 seconds slower answering the questions using the phone.
There are definitely times when something demands attention other than driving. If there’s something going on that’s more important than driving, stop driving. Find a safe and legal spot to pull over and park in order to address the situation.
